MENTIONS LÉGALES

The medical term for nosebleeds is epistaxis – the origin of which is Greek, meaning “dropping”. Nosebleeds usually happen suddenly and can be embarrassing and very disruptive to your life. Some people suffer from recurrent nosebleeds, sometimes several times a week.

The causes of nosebleeds can be quite common and sometimes more uncommon. They can be divided into 2 groups: nosebleeds due to a trauma (aggression) and nosebleeds that seem spontaneous, appearing without any reason:
- Traumatic nosebleeds are usually due to nose picking or the insertion of an object in the nasal cavity (children’s toys for example), nasal trauma or injury, repeated chemical nasal cauterization…
- Spontaneous nosebleeds can result from infection of the nasal  mucous (due to nose blowing, a cold or allergies) the dryness of the air (winter, high heat, air-conditioned rooms, altitude), infectious diseases like rhinitis or sinusitis, hypertension, blood thinners (aspirin, anticoagulants), nasal tumors, Hemophilia, Von Willebrand disease…

Over 90% of nosebleeds occur in the lower cavity of the nose, due to the thin and fragile tissue in this area and the large number of blood vessels which damage easily.

Coalgan® is specifically designed to rapidly stop the minor nosebleeds from the lower cavity of the nose and accelerates the healing process. Coalgan® is a calcium alginate, a molecule derived from seaweeds also called bio-polymers. Coalgan® is a 100% vegetal swab that offers unique properties

The Origins of Coalgan®

In 1949, Coalgan® was born in a small French Laboratory, Laboratoires Brothier, located in Fontevraud L’Abbaye in Anjou and pioneered the use of calcium alginate in haemostasis and tissue repair.

Coalgan® has been used for more 60 years and has been proven safe, with no allergic reactions or negative side-effects reported.

Coalgan®, how does it work?

Coalgan® is a vegetal swab made from calcium alginate fibers. These fibers contain calcium ions that are released in the wound when they come in contact with blood. The calcium ions help the platelets aggregation and reduce the coagulation time. They also stimulate the key cells of the healing process. The bleeding stops rapidly!

Coalgan’s fibers change into a moist or gelified mass when they come in contact with blood. The moistness of the mass against the wound site promotes healing. The gelified mass prevents Coalgan® from sticking to the new clot and rebleeding. It also assures an easy and painless removal.

How to use Coalgan®?

1- When the nosebleed starts, keep your head down and blow your nose to clear any clots.

2- Tear the pouch along the line

3- Twist Coalgan® to facilitate insertion. You can also moisten Coalgan® with normal saline solution to help the insertion inside the nasal cavity.

4- Insert Coalgan® until the exposed end of the swab is just to the base of the nasal cavity

5- Pinch the nose for 10 minutes and leave Coalgan® in place for a maximum 30 minutes. Most minor nosebleeds last between 5 and 10 minutes

6- Remove Coalgan by pinching the exposed end of the swab. If Coalgan feels dry, you can moisten Coalgan with normal saline solution before removal.

Coalgan® should not stay in place for more than 24 hours. If the bleeding cannot be stopped, it should be treated by a Healthcare Professional.

You may notice a few fibers remaining in the nasal cavity after removal. These fibers will shortly disappear naturally.

It is safe to use during pregnancy.  It is well adapted for people who have difficulty stopping bleeding due to the use of blood thinners or specific blood disorders, or for people who have healing delays, such as those experienced by people with diabetes.
